NANTUCKET — The Nantucket Finance Committee elected new leadership and mapped out priorities for the coming budget cycle. Joanna Roche was elected chair and Peter N. Schaeffer vice chair by unanimous roll-call votes at the Aug. 18 meeting.
Members also appointed Anthonie Goudemond to represent the committee on the Community Resources Committee, which oversees roughly $800,000 a year in town human-services grants, and appointed a member identified as Howard to the Capital Program Committee. Roche outlined five priorities for the year, including capital spending, debt affordability, the Island Home's long-term commitments, operating budget stability and a clearer Town Meeting financial guide, saying "I think a lot of people who have been in town a long time ... will go with what we recommend." Members also flagged unresolved financing questions on projects including a $40 million bridge and a $100 million airport runway, 95 percent of which a town official said will be FAA-funded.
