Nantucket Parks and Recreation eyes $625,000 rebuild of both Little League fields; soccer club's fall registration deadline looms.

YOUTH LEAGUES -- At the July 17 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, staff member Charlie outlined a proposal — developed with the Nantucket Little League board — that the commission will bring to the Community Preservation Committee seeking roughly $625,000 to overhaul both Little League fields. The plan calls for replacing the aging chain-link backstops with netting that can be dropped in winter to avoid wind damage, adding a padded lower wall for player safety, installing new black bonded perimeter fencing, redoing dugouts, replacing batting cages (one of which is currently unusable), installing a new scoreboard and bleachers, and reinstalling a warning track around the outfield that had been removed at some point and converted back to grass. Charlie noted the commission has already put roughly 250 tons of infield mix into the fields over the past two years and called the fencing and warning-track work a planned summer project. The funding request has not yet gone to a CPC vote.

Nantucket Soccer Club's website confirms fall 2026 travel soccer registration is open, with a note urging families to register by July 31 to avoid late fees.

No Nantucket High School games were reported for this period.

COMMUNITY -- The Parks and Recreation Commission approved an application for an Aug. 3 outdoor workout class at Children's Beach, submitted by Cav in partnership with Mast. The 75-person class is set for 8 to 10 a.m. on the lawn area (with the instructor on the bandstand), pending submission of a fire department emergency action plan. Commissioners noted the beach remains a public park during the event, so passersby may join the class, and organizers were told not to sell merchandise or advertise gear on-site.
