Nantucket Select Board unanimously approved year-end general fund and enterprise fund budget transfers July 13, closing out fiscal year 2026 with approximately $1.4 million in salary restorations to town departments. The transfers are a planned consequence of a strategy built into the FY26 budget, under which Town Administration reduced every general fund operating department's salary line by a combined $2.25 million and cut the health insurance budget by $750,000 to account for chronic vacancies; departments that saw few vacancies needed their budgets restored at year's end. Town Administrator Brian told the board the results came in close to projections across almost all departments, with the Police Department finishing well below projections after roughly $600,000 in weighted vacancy savings and the Harbormaster the one potential overage due to lifeguard hiring timing and overtime.

Enterprise fund transfers covered Island Home's reliance on nursing staffing agencies, the Sewer Department's use of on-call contractors to cover work that vacant positions could not handle, and a cost-of-living adjustment for the sole stormwater employee. Brian said FY27 will take a sharper approach: chronically unfilled positions will be removed from the budget entirely rather than reduced and restored at year's end.
