Nantucket Council on Aging advances Salt Marsh Senior Center expansion plan

Council on Aging · Meeting of March 4, 2026

Nantucket's Council on Aging heard plans for a 786-square-foot addition to the Salt Marsh Senior Center and set its 2026 Senior of the Year timeline. John Kopenhauer, representing the Nantucket Center for Elder Affairs, told the board at its March 4 meeting that the expansion — extending the harbor-side wall roughly 12 feet — has cleared Select Board, Historic District Commission, and Conservation Commission review, with a building permit pending and construction targeted for completion by early June; he said a capital campaign with a matching grant is in place and that "funding will not be an issue." The center, built in 1985 for a population of 5,700, now serves an island of more than 20,000 and recorded roughly 16,000 daytime encounters and 1,600-plus after-hours encounters in calendar year 2025. The board voted unanimously to set a nomination deadline of April 24 for its annual Senior of the Year award, with the selection vote at the May meeting and a celebration tentatively at Sherburne Commons on June 25.

Member Erin Lynch also detailed the new Medicare-covered GUIDE dementia caregiver program, which provides roughly $2,500 annually in respite care and is already active on Nantucket through Best of Care, the only organization currently conducting live eligibility checks on the island.
