Nantucket OKs Relocating Golf Course Wetland
Nantucket's Conservation Commission approved relocating a Sankety Head Golf Club wetland over objections from a land-preservation group.
Conservation · Meeting of October 1, 2026
Nantucket's Conservation Commission approved relocating a Sankety Head Golf Club wetland over objections from a land-preservation group. LEC Environmental Consultants' Brian Madden told the board the 2,750-square-foot wetland, maintained as turf since 1921, would move to a nearly 10,000-square-foot area at a 1.5-to-1 replication ratio. Willa Arsenault of the Nantucket Land and Water Council countered that "this appears to be a functioning wetland that's in an inconvenient location" and asked the board to require proof the new wetland works before the old one is destroyed.
The commission voted 4-0, with member RJ Turcotte recused. The board also approved accessibility upgrades at the Egan Maritime-operated lifesaving museum on Pulpis Road and a cottage lift at 15 Old North Wharf, and flagged a possible state move to designate Nantucket Harbor as priority habitat.
