Harbor Board Advances Oyster Farm Review
The Nantucket Harbor and Shellfish Advisory Board continued its review of a proposed intertidal oyster farming expansion at the August 18 meeting, with members insisting any new acreage be offered equally to all of the island's oyster farmers rather than reserved for applicant Sean Fitzgibbon alone.

NANTUCKET — The Nantucket Harbor and Shellfish Advisory Board continued its review of a proposed intertidal oyster farming expansion at the August 18 meeting, with members insisting any new acreage be offered equally to all of the island's oyster farmers rather than reserved for applicant Sean Fitzgibbon alone. Board member Kevin presented preliminary figures showing aquaculture occupies about 1.7 percent of Nantucket Harbor's roughly 5,254 acres, compared with 3.3 percent in Wellfleet Harbor and 4.8 percent in Barnstable Harbor. Board member Peter said, "We shouldn't be all about trying to fill it up as much as we can and put it at capacity." Member Scott Anderson reported bank erosion and a foul-smelling sediment blockage near Long Pond and Little Neck earlier this summer, already addressed by the Natural Resources Department.
The board voted 5-0 to adjourn at 6:30 p.m., continuing shellfish regulation and soft shell clam season items to its September 1 meeting.
