NANTUCKET — The Nantucket Historic District Commission opened its fall season without voting on any substantive policy, deferring a proposed as-built fine schedule, a new demolition definition and an expanded paint-color list to future meetings. Commissioners approved the day's agenda 4-0 and later voted 5-0 to adjourn. Staff told the board a Orange Street paint violation sat unresolved for a year and a half before a citation forced compliance, prompting discussion of a standard 60-day deadline for as-built fixes.
Commissioner Carrie Thornwell argued fines are "onerous" for good-faith mistakes and pushed to spend fine revenue on public advertising, though staff noted fines go to the town, not the commission. Staff also confirmed $75,000 is now available through the Community Preservation Committee to rewrite the commission's design guideline book.
