Nantucket Parks and Rec unanimously endorses Article 12 ahead of May 4 town meeting

NANTUCKET — April 23, 2026 — Nantucket Parks and Rec Commission backs Article 12 and approves two Children's Beach events ahead of May 4 town meeting. The commission voted unanimously Thursday to publicly endorse Article 12 — a school-related capital project that survived a proposed Board of Health moratorium last week — with Commissioner Nikki moving the measure and the chair noting it was time to take "a public face and not be completely silent on the subject." The board also unanimously approved a four-session line dancing series at the Children's Beach bandstand from the Nantucket Community School, running Tuesdays in July at $30 per session, and a free June 28 wellness movement event for up to 100 participants organized by Nantucket Wellness Festival host Joanne Burnham. Staff previewed town meeting capital asks including a standalone Article 16 for Tom Nevers beach phase two cleanup and, within Article 10, an approximately $1 million request to reconstruct the Tom Nevers hockey rink as a multi-use sports court lined for pickleball, tennis, basketball, and roller hockey.
