Nantucket CPC Clears Heifer Barn Reallocation, Orders Mitchell House Roof Walk Inquiry

Other Committee · Meeting of April 28, 2026

Nantucket's Community Preservation Committee approved a grant fund reallocation for a historic heifer barn and authorized its chair to investigate whether decades-old dormant appropriations can cover a $60,000 roof walk repair at the Mariah Mitchell House. The committee voted unanimously at its April 28 meeting to allow NISDA to apply electrical and utility line-item surpluses — totaling roughly $82,500 within a fiscal year 2024 heifer barn grant — toward $92,000 in unbudgeted foundation work the organization encountered after moving the donated structure. On the Mitchell House, Jason Leonardo Finger of the Mariah Mitchell Association told the committee that an 83-mile-per-hour February storm destabilized the roof walk, which sits under a preservation easement and must be replaced at a cost of $60,000, with $20,000 donated by the contractor.

Committee Chair Linda was authorized to meet with Finance Director Steven Hunter to find unspent balances in Mitchell House warrant articles going back to fiscal year 2005, with a fallback option of tapping the committee's administrative budget surplus discussed but conditioned on a written state opinion. The committee also received a housing update showing Nantucket at 8.04 percent on the Subsidized Housing Inventory — up from 6.55 percent in July — with 32 additional units under construction at 18 to 26 Sparks Avenue that have not yet been added to the list, and the island's median residential listing price now at $4.1 million, the highest in the nation.
