Nantucket CPC Unanimously Approves $40,000 for Storm-Damaged Maria Mitchell Roof Walk

NANTUCKET — May 1, 2026 — Nantucket CPC approves $40,000 emergency reserve transfer for storm-damaged Maria Mitchell roof walk. The Community Preservation Committee convened a six-minute 48-hour special meeting by Zoom on May 1, voting unanimously 7-0 to approve a technical amendment to Article 34 of the Annual Town Meeting warrant, directing $40,000 from undesignated CPC reserves to the Maria Mitchell Association for repairs to the Mitchell House roof walk. The walk was partially destroyed in a February 2026 windstorm and must legally remain on the structure under the property's preservation easement. The chair said she negotiated the contractor's estimate down from $60,000 to $40,000 before bringing the item forward. The Finance Committee approved the amendment Thursday, and Town Counsel and warrant-amendment authority Libby also signed off before the CPC's vote. The meeting also served as the final official session for departing member Tom, whom the chair thanked for his "steady, calm leadership."
